Pack feeding in kids - we knew they were wolves all along

The NY Times recently reported on how children in larger groups eat
more recently. May have important implications on how day cares and
schools feed kids given the obesity epidemic. See this study

Test of Mail posting to Vox

Ran across a posting that showed how to post to my Vox blog via email. Solves the Safari incompatability with Macs on Vox and since I'm not big into Firefox currently it may be do the trick.

Papers - Scientific paper PDF management

Papers

Most scientists have transitioned from the paper manuscript world to the electronic digital world especially when it comes to managing scientific papers.  I've been using Papers, a Public Preview (aka Beta) program programmed by 2 grad students in the Netherlands that is a nice and elegant way to organize PDF files.  It features interface with Pubmed, saved searches with Pubmed, and the ability to integrate your existing PDF file structure.  I've toyed with Endnote, Adobe Acrobat, and iTunes to manage my PDF's but Papers is by far the best and most Mac like environment I've used.  I especially like the ability to view the PDFs full screen when I read the articles.

Science and religion...the beat goes on

Recently there have been a few interesting additions to the science and religion debate.  Francis Collins and Richard Dawkins have been pitted against each other on many occasions and they both have book out presenting their side of the arguments.  Terrific interviews with both on NPR's Fresh Air.

Francis Collins talks about his new book The Language of God.  Presents interesting arguments for how he reconciles his Evangelical faith with science.  I thought the most interesting part was the discussion of his family life and how he became religious.  I was taught by Francis in grad school and medical school at Univ of Michigan (Go Blue!) and proud to call him a fellow Wolverine.

Richard Dawkins talks about his book The God Delusion.  I found his arguments a bit hard to strongly support after listing to the interview with Francis.  Primarily based on probabilities which I guess is fair but I think Francis hits the mark better in explaining why Science and Religion could and perhaps should be separated a bit.

Hi there.  This will be my first blog presenting interesting thoughts, obervations, and news...well at least interesting to me.  I'm a scientist and physician so will present my take on science, technology, computers, and whatever else comes across my desk.

Feel free to add comments and concerns and thanks for viewing.
